Limescale is caused by hard water
Hard water is mineral rich, particularly calcium carbonate and magnesium. These minerals are the main components of limescale, limescale forms when these minerals bond together and on to surfaces, forming layers of hard deposits.
Not only does limescale form on taps and showers but also in pipes and equipment, such as your boiler. In fact limescale lowers the efficiency and lifespan of equipment such as boilers and washing machines.
You’ll have more limescale if your water is harder
We can categorise water hardness into 3 different groups, the ppm stands for parts per million and refers to the amount of calcium carbonate and magnesium present in the water:
Soft to moderately soft water – 1 -100ppm
Medium to moderately hard water- 100-200ppm
Hard to very hard water – Over 200 ppm
Water is hard when it runs through or sits in areas with high mineral content and water taken from certain sources is much more likely to be hard. Groundwater sources such as underground aquifers are a prime example of a hard water source.
Limescale is costly!
At higher temperatures limescale forms more quickly, which means heating elements in your boiler and other equipment are prime areas for limescale to form. Limescale is an insulator meaning more energy is required to heat the water. In fact for every 1mm of limescale on a heating element the amount of energy needed increases 7-10%.
As you can imagine, in very hard water areas this can really add up. Limescale can end up increasing your energy bills by £500 on top of the additional cost for descaling chemicals.
