Using a water conditioner unit could help lower costs for the UK’s estimated 1.7 million households using heating oil, which have seen the price per litre of oil trebling since the start of the Iran war, according to Samantha Mant, CEO and founder of Halcyan Water Conditioners.

Carbon Trust figures show that every 1 mm of limescale on any heating element adds 7-10% to its energy consumption. However, Halcyan Water Conditioner units can clear heating elements of limescale and keep them clean, saving the household significant amounts of operational energy. In addition to removing and keeping limescale away from heating elements to ensure energy isn’t wasted when producing hot water, the Halcyan units can increase the reliability of household items such as washing machines and dish washers, while minimising maintenance and replacement costs.

Halcyan CEO and founder Samantha Mant, says: “As oil heating and cost of living prices continue to soar, households are running out of ways to save money on their bills. However, one way to achieve a more energy-efficient home is to install a sustainable water conditioner which can save households hundreds of pounds per year. This small device takes under an hour to install and requires no additional cupboard space. It not only prevents future limescale but also treats existing limescale in your system making cleaning your appliances easier. As well it provides softened water for healthier hair and skin.”

How does hard water affect my energy bills?

Hard water affects 60% of UK households, which is around 17 million homes. Households supplied with hard water suffer from limescale build-up on appliances, fixtures and fittings. While those living in a hard water area are likely to notice limescale build-up in the kettle and on taps, it’s harder to detect harmful limescale deposits in the washing machine, dishwasher and boiler. It’s the limescale in these appliances, especially the boiler, that can impact on energy bills.

Limescale build-up reduces the efficiency of heating elements meaning they have to work harder and use more energy to be effective. This not only increases energy bills but damages appliances, leading them to break down more frequently. If you live in a hard water area you can expect to replace your boiler, dishwasher and washing machine up to twice as often as a result of limescale damage.

Hard water can also make detergents and cleaning products less effective, so you have to use more to achieve the same result, adding up to £500 more to your annual shopping bills.

How do I treat hard water in my home?

While there are many limescale treatments available, they typically use harsh chemicals which are then washed down the drain and into the watercourse, and that’s bad news for the environment. However, water conditioners treat hard water as it enters the home by using a solid alloy core to create a powerful change to the structure of the minerals, ensuring they can’t bond to surfaces as they travel through the house. This method doesn’t use salts, chemicals or energy, so there are no on-going costs or maintenance.

Research suggests that households can expect to see a significant reduction in their energy bills and their detergent usage. On average, households can save £4-500 a year for the 30 years that their unit is under warranty. Halcyan conditioners are certified by the Water Regulations Approval Scheme, which means that you can be certain that they deliver 100% safe, healthy drinking water.

Halcyan is exhibiting at stand F128 at this weekend’s Homebuilding & Renovating Show, (19-22 March, NEC, Birmingham) a Free reader tickets to the show can be found here: https://www.homebuildingshow.co.uk/pr-general-outlets

The Hidden Cost of Hard Water

Hard water supplies 60% of UK households which results in limescale accumulation inside plumbing and heating systems. Every millimeter of scale in plumbing and heating systems raises energy consumption by 7–10% which leads to higher energy bills and more carbon emissions.

Halcyan’s Innovative Approach

Halcyan delivers an eco-friendly hard water treatment solution that conditions hard water to mimic soft water while avoiding chemical and salt-based methods. The installation process requires less than one hour and delivers comprehensive protection throughout the home. The investment pays off in around two and a half years which makes it both affordable and environmentally responsible.

Challenges in Adoption

The implementation of these water treatment systems encounters multiple obstacles despite their advantages. Government regulations fail to address hard water problems while accreditation procedures remain slow and complicated. The lack of consumer awareness about water treatment solutions highlights the importance of educational initiatives in this area.

Conclusion

Significant improvements to home energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction depend on effective hard water treatment solutions. Halcyan offers a practical and sustainable solution to address this widespread problem. The inclusion of these advanced solutions in retrofitting projects helps us progress toward our environmental objectives.

In the quest for a more sustainable and efficient home, we often overlook the impact of water quality on our appliances. A recent study by the Water Quality Research Foundation has uncovered a fascinating revelation: appliances using soft water enjoy a 30-50% longer lifespan. Not only that, but the efficiency gains extend further—these appliances don’t have to work as hard, resulting in a potential 27% reduction in energy use. In this blog we explore the advantages of soft water on household appliances and celebrate a zero-energy solution to hard water. Let’s delve into the details of this eco-friendly revelation.

The Soft Water Advantage: Prolonging Appliance Lifespan

Hard water, laden with minerals like calcium and magnesium, can wreak havoc on our appliances over time. The build-up of limescale not only diminishes efficiency but also shortens the lifespan of our valuable devices. The Water Quality Research Foundation’s findings highlight a simple yet powerful solution: soft water. Appliances that operate with soft water enjoy a significantly longer life, a victory for both homeowners and the environment.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-86100" src="https://halcyanwater.com/wp-content/uploads/washing-machine.png" alt="zero-energy solution" width="500" height="300" srcset="https://halcyanwater.com/wp-content/uploads/washing-machine.png 500w, https://halcyanwater.com/wp-content/uploads/washing-machine-300x180.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" / loading="lazy">

Efficiency Unleashed: The Energy-Saving Potential

Beyond the extended lifespan of appliances, the study reveals another compelling aspect of using soft water—efficiency gains that translate into energy savings. Appliances operating with soft water don’t have to exert as much effort to overcome the challenges posed by limescale build-up. This reduced workload can lead to a remarkable 27% reduction in energy consumption, contributing not only to lower utility bills but also to a smaller carbon footprint.

The Zero-Energy Solution: Halcyan Water Conditioner

Taking the green initiative a step further, our solution for prolonging the lifespan of household appliances is the Halcyan Water Conditioner. What sets this device apart is its ability to achieve soft water without consuming any energy. In a world where environmental consciousness is paramount, the zero-energy aspect of Halcyan Water Conditioners is a game-changer. Homeowners can now enjoy the benefits of soft water without contributing to additional energy consumption.

Making the Sustainable Choice:

Long-Term Cost Savings: While the initial investment in a soft water solution may seem daunting, the long-term benefits in terms of extended appliance life and reduced energy bills make it a financially savvy choice.

Environmental Impact: The collective impact of using soft water and energy-efficient appliances is a step towards a more sustainable future. It’s a small change at the individual level that can contribute to broader environmental conservation efforts.

Zero-Energy Solutions: Embracing technologies like the Halcyan Water Conditioner not only addresses the limescale issue but does so without adding to our energy consumption. It’s a win-win for homeowners looking to go green without compromising on comfort.

Conclusion

As we strive to build homes that align with the principles of sustainability, the role of water quality in our daily lives cannot be overstated. The Water Quality Research Foundation’s study underscores the profound impact of soft water on both appliance longevity and energy efficiency. By opting for a soft water solution and embracing zero-energy technology like the Halcyan Water Conditioner, homeowners can make choices that benefit not only their wallets but also the health of the planet. It’s a small change that carries significant rewards for the environment and future generations.

EcoDriven and the Sustainability Showcase Tour

This initiative is all about bringing sustainability to the forefront of peoples minds. It is the first ever roadshow with a bus retrofitted with sustainable and eco, materials and products that are better for the planet, and Halcyan are thrilled to be taking part.

The reason EcoDriven chose a bus was the ability to fill it with the very best sustainable materials and show them in action to the entire country, getting people and businesses involved on a core level.

People need to see things in action, they need to know it works and that it is better that what they are using already. We are also bringing communities and businesses together in one massive eco advertising mission, that will boost awareness of sustainable living choices and products.

There is something special about seeing things in action and working – that is why we decided to create the largest mobile showcase possible – a double-decker bus full of these products stopping at many cities and locations for the whole of the UK to see and interact with in person or via our digital and TV partners.

EcoDriven will do this is by travelling to multiple participating locations and cities, where businesses and people can come on board and see things in action. The wattage of the solar roof, the thermal saving from the natural/recycled insulation, the quality of the Cradle2Cradle Gold flooring. The team will be transmitting for the entire tour, all of the sensor data and learning while they go, making improvements, encouraging debate and participation. It is a tour of hope for the future!

They will also, be hosting backseat talks (on Mycelium seating) and a Moss back wall. These talks are about opening a debate and will include special guests, experts in their field, politicians, business leaders and local people.

The bus stops will allow us and the locations to have a mini event of one to a few days in length, sharing and publishing what is available and special locally, plus the challenges faced unique to the area.

Join us for the most important tour in current times!

The bus will be in Bristol, the home of Halcyan Water Conditioners, from Wednesday 21 June 2023 for 3 days.

COP is a summit run by the UN, COP stands for ‘Conference of Parties’ and these yearly summits have been running since 1995. The stated aim of these events is to accelerate climate action globally, reducing emissions and transitioning to a more sustainable way of life. At COP21 in 2015, for example, the Paris Agreement was signed. It should come as no surprise that every COP is more urgent than the last, as targets are missed or extended. The topics and subjects covered at COP are broad and include everything from curbing the use of fossil fuels to encouraging ‘green’ finance. Governments are not the only attendees at these event as they are an excellent opportunity for NGO’s and sustainable business to showcase innovative solutions and technologies.

Anyone with any sense will agree that climate change is an existential challenge facing everyone on this planet. Current trends suggest that we will easily exceed the stated 1.5-degree temperature rise goal of the Paris agreement. COP is one of the biggest drivers to accelerate change in order to make sure we don’t pass that mark and head into catastrophe. COP27 is not without its controversies however; many high-profile climate activists see it as a way for Government’s and powerful corporations to greenwash the agenda. That is to say, do very little whilst making a lot of performative statements to the contrary. Regardless, there are few events on the subject climate change which draw anywhere close to the amount of investment and publicity as COP.

Hard water is a frustrating fact of life for most of the UK. It damages expensive equipment, makes bathrooms and kitchens look grotty and unappealing and can even dry out skin and hair. But sadly there is another much more serious aspect of limescale which is not well known. From homeowners all the way to the head policy makers in government. That is the effect that limescale has on sustainability and the environment. Limescale doesn’t just damage heating elements over time but severely reduces their efficiency meaning more carbon released into the atmosphere every time you heat up your water.

In this article we’ll take a look at how limescale and hard water impact sustainability and the solutions to the problem.

As mentioned above limescale reduces energy efficiency in appliances which heat water. But why? The answer is quite simple. Limescale is an insulator, so when a layer of limescale forms on a heating element it will absorb some of the heat output by the element. Meaning more energy is required to heat the same amount of water.

The Carbon Trust found that 1mm of limescale causes a 7% increase in the amount of energy required to heat the water. In hard water areas it is rare to have just 1mm of scale meaning the loss in energy efficiency can reach significant levels. This impacts not just your boiler but any appliance which heats water, including your washing machine and your dishwasher. If you then multiply the carbon released by one home across the areas serviced by hard water (over 60% of the country), the number is quite staggering. Calculations using data from BEIS 2018 report find that residential hard water production accounts for approximately 4% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions. For such a mundane problem, limescale has an outsized impact!

One also can’t forget the same problem is also present in the commercial sector, there are numerous industrial and agricultural processes which rely on hot water to function. Just like British homes they are very likely to be in a hard water area.

So, limescale impacts the energy efficiency of appliance which produce with hot water. But this also goes one step further. As limescale builds up on heating elements the element is under much more stress needing more and more energy to function until it breaks.

We’re sure many of you have had a heating engineer or washing machine repair person come by and pull out a fully encrusted heating element. This is of course a great inconvenience and expense but it is also adds another burden onto the environment, in the form of wasted materials and further consumption of resources for a replacement. And limescale doesn’t just affect the heating elements, the hoses and drum of a washing machine can also be rendered unusable due to limescale build. As can showerheads, taps and other fixtures. In research done by the Water Quality Research Foundation it was found that low flow showerheads and taps would clog up with limescale within 7 days under stress testing.

Whilst the most significant environmental damage caused by limescale happens ‘behind the scenes’ the visible aspect has sustainability issues all of its own. Limescale once it has deposited on surfaces and fixtures can be incredibly stubborn. The deposits harden to the point where brute force is needed to dislodge them. To avoid this arduous task most turn to chemical descalers such as viakal. With several of these products there are concerns about how they may affect the environment when released into the water table. Without a doubt however the use of these products results in high levels of plastic waste along with carbon emitted from import and export.

So it is clear that the limescale caused by hard water contributes to our carbon footprints. So how can this issue dealt with? There are several available methods which either prevent or reduce limescale. The most well-known are traditional water softeners with water conditioners as the widely used alternative.

Water softeners function via a process known as ion exchange. In short they swap the hard water mineral ions in the water with sodium ions, thereby supplying the house with soft water. This process prevents almost all limescale build up in the system. In a major study on the effects of limescale the Water Quality Research Foundation found that softening water could yield a 14.8% reduction in the carbon footprint of a storage type gas water heater over a period of 15 years. In additional studies it was found that softening water allowed for use of lower temperatures and a reduction in detergent when washing clothes.

Water conditioners use a variety of different methodologies. The unifying feature is that unlike traditional salt-based systems they do not remove the hard minerals from the water, but instead alter the way those minerals behave thus reducing or preventing the formation of limescale. Because of the wide variety of different systems and varying effectiveness of those systems it isn’t possible to come up with a general overview of how well water conditioners reduce a homes environmental impact. For Halcyan we commissioned a calculation of potential carbon savings. This found that by fitting a Halcyan the average UK household could decrease its carbon footprint by 14%. The other advantage of a system like Halcyan is that it is entirely passive and requires no maintenance or replacement throughout its lifespan.

Whilst water softeners do a great job dealing with limescale they are not without their problems. The biggest issue is the use of salt. Water softeners rely on a steady supply of salt to function. Acquiring this salt will of course add to the carbon footprint of the device. Not only that but during the water softener’s regeneration process the left-over sodium chloride is released into the water ways. In high quantities this can have severe environmental impacts. In some U.S states water softeners are banned or heavily regulated for this reason. The regeneration process also uses up more water than normal, with older models able to use an additional 25 gallons of water per day.
So while water softeners may excel in dealing with the limescale problem, they are by no means a perfect solution and can be environmentally detrimental in other ways.

Again, due to the diverse methodologies employed by conditioners the environmental downsides can vary. TAC systems , for example use a resin media in their process. This needs to be disposed of and replaced once used up. Systems like Aquabion and Halcyan add to their carbon footprint through mining for the metals used in their alloys and outer casings. For the most part however water conditioners have few additional environmental impacts when compared to traditional salt-based systems.

It may come as a surprise to hear that COP26 is the first COP to have a dedicated Water pavilion. Due to the frightening circumstances we find ourselves in, more than 30 of the biggest water organisations across the world have collaborated to bring the challenges facing our water supply to the forefront. Some of the key organisers include the IUCN and SIWI to name just a few. Torgny Holmgren, Executive Director of SIWI had this to say about the Water Pavilion: “The climate crisis is primarily a water crisis. To a large extent, we experience global warming in the form of too much or too little water, as floods or droughts. But few countries are aware of how much they can gain from focusing more on water in their climate action, and that is what we want to change with the first-ever Water Pavilion.”

The pavilion runs livestreams of the various sessions, so if you are interested why not check out the agenda and have a watch?

Obviously the topic of water is as vast as the oceans themselves, but where climate change is involved there are some key areas of focus.

The first is mitigation. What can policy makers do to reduce the strain on our water supplies and prevent future strain where possible

The second resilience, as the climate changes the burden on water supplies will increase drastically, especially when we rake into account that many renewable energy sources require a lot of water to produce. So how do policy makers help to preserve and maintain the water that we have currently to meet the needs of the future?

The third is adaptation. There will be many situations where we can not mitigate the impacts of climate change and our water resources aren’t resilient enough to cope. So how do we adapt to this? What changes do we need to make so that we are still able to function effectively in our new reality?

These are of course broad-brush themes and within each of these are much more detailed topics being covered throughout the summit. Here at Halcyan we’re particularly in the intersection of water and energy.

So where does Halcyan fit into the conversation? We are after all a small business with a small product (one of its selling points in fact!). The answer is of course hard water. Across the world areas are supplied by hard water, hard water in turn produces limescale which, over time significantly reduces the efficiency of heating elements. Not only does energy usage increase in areas suffering from hard water but so does waste. When elements and equipment become scaled up they are scrapped more often than not.

Halcyan and systems like it take limescale out of the equation. This means less energy and materials are wasted in both domestic and commercial contexts. It is estimated that a household can save 0.5 tonnes of carbon a year with a Halcyan fitted. Multiply that by the millions in Britain alone and our small contribution starts to add up!

COP is a UN run summit which aims to bring together representatives from almost all nations on earth to tackle climate change. COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’ and these conferences have been running annually since 1995. The upcoming COP will be the 26th session since these events were started, hence the title COP26. The aim of these summits is to devise agreements, treaties and goals in the fight against climate change. The Paris agreement of 2015 was drawn up at COP21 for example. You may have noticed that most previous COPs didn’t generate as much press as COP26.

The sense of urgency around climate change has shifted into another gear entirely since the Paris agreement. The goal of the Paris agreement was to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees C. The current global trajectory is well and dangerously beyond that mark. The effects of climate change are now more obvious than ever with frequent record breaking extreme weather events in countries across the globe. For many COP26 is seen as our last real chance to get our emissions under control.

Under the Paris agreement signatories agrees to draft plans, detailing the extent they would curb their emission and how they would set about doing so. These plans were know as Nationally Determined Contributions or ‘NDCs’. An important part of the NDCs was the agreement that they would be revisited and updated in 5 years. The 5 years are up and COP26 is the event where we should hope to see some very ambitious targets declared by many of the key polluting countries.

The UK, which is running the conference has also stated that there are 3 additional areas which will be focused on along with the overarching goal of reducing emissions to meet the 1.5 target.

The first is climate finance, as part of COP 15 in Copenhagen poor countries were promised $100bn a year to tackle climate issues by 2020. The target was not met and developing countries are pushing to receive the rest of the funds along with an expansion in finance going forward.

The second is the total phase out of coal, this is an essential step to remaining under 1.5C. Many countries including China, India and Australia all still consume and produce significant amounts of coal. Convincing these nations to drop their reliance on coal will be one of the big pushes of the event.

Finally there will be a focus on nature based solutions to climate change. These include more focus on protecting and expanding existing natural carbon sinks such as forests, wetlands and peatlands. The Amazon rainforest will be an area of particular focus as one of the worlds largest carbon sinks which is under considerable threat.

It should come as no surprise that global warming is one of the biggest challenges faced by the modern world. Last year the British government committed to end its contribution to global warming completely by 2050. It was the first major economy to do so and this is something to be be proud of. But what does reaching net zero carbon mean? How is the government planning on meeting this ambitious target?

Almost every aspect of our day to day lives involves a significant output of greenhouse gases. At a first glance meeting this target may seem almost like an impossibility. But as of July 2019 the UK has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 42% while expanding the economy by 72%. In order to deliver on this target the government is electing to deal with the 6 major contributors to UK emissions: Transport, Energy, Domestic Housing, Agriculture, Waste Management and Industrial processes.

Overhauling these sectors with sustainability in mind, both retroactively and in future, is the key to hitting that target. An example that is related to our business, is the domestic housing market. New builds must meet part L of the building regulations which refers to the conservation of fuel and power in the building. Retrofitting old and inefficient buildings is also emerging as a key strategy. There are several innovative products and components which are aimed at this market with sustainability in mind including our own.
Whilst encouraging steps have been made in the right direction it is clear that much more needs to be done. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) released a progress report in July 2019 and stated that the UK government’s policy actions were not nearly sufficient in meeting the 2050 net zero target. Whilst a lot of progress has been made in the Energy sector it is transport, residential housing and business which need to see significant changes and reductions. Whilst carbon capture and offsetting schemes have proven popular as a means to dealing with a large portion of UK emissions this will not be enough and more radical policies are needed and quickly.

We should be proud of our commitment to our ambitious goal to reach net zero carbon by 2050. But we also need to ensure that we do not come up short. In future we will be releasing articles going into more detail about specific policies, focused primarily on the domestic housing sector, as this is where our business fits into the conversation. We will also occasionally indulge ourselves and explore other areas of the drive to sustainability on occasion as well.

Our system deals with a very niche section of the sustainability agenda but that doesn’t mean that we can’t talk about some of the aims and goals on a grander scale. This is the first of many articles which will be tackling the greater national and global sustainability targets as well as promising innovations in the field. In this article we’ll be specifically looking at the UN Sustainable Development Goals, their aims and some of the progress being currently made to meet them.

The sustainable development goals (SDG’s) also known as global goals are a collection of international targets set in 2015. They aim to produce egalitarian and sustainable societies the world over by 2030. There are 17 goals in total but there is significant overlap and integration between them. For example goal number 1 is to end poverty, goal number 4 is to ensure quality, inclusive and equitable education for all, which helps to achieve the aims of goal 1.
193 governments have ratified the SDG’s. They have also taken steps to implement polices to try and reach the goals by 2030. NGO’s and private enterprise can also commit to supporting the sustainable development goals.
